Mia Farrow, Bobby Cannavale, Naomi Watts and Margo Martindale also star in the limited series set in New Jersey based on true events.
Meet Karen Calhoun. She is not like a normal Karen: she is a Cold Karen, and she’s ready to sell you the house of your dreams. But Karen may or may not be a stalker…
Jennifer Coolidge transforms into Karen, an elite New Jersey real estate agent at the center of Ryan Murphy’s latest true crime miniseries, “The Watcher.” Based on true events, “The Watcher” even has a fake Zillow listing for the infamous Westfield, New Jersey house that Karen Calhoun sold to an unsuspecting couple, played by Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale. Emmy winner Murphy and Ian Brennan co-created and executive produced the series, which also stars Mia Farrow and Margo Martindale.
The official description for the series reads: “Dean (Cannavale) and Nora Brannock (Watts) have just bought their dream home in the idyllic suburb of Westfield, New Jersey, but after putting all their savings into closing the deal, soon they realize that the neighborhood is less than welcoming. There’s a wacky older woman named Pearl (Farrow) and her brother Jasper (Terry Kinney), who sneaks into the Brannocks’ house and hides in her dumbwaiter. There’s Karen (Coolidge), the real estate agent and an old acquaintance of Nora’s, who makes them feel like they don’t really belong, and nosy neighbors Mitch (Richard Kind) and Mo (Martindale), who don’t seem to understand property lines. . Their icy welcome quickly turns to hell when ominous letters from someone calling themselves ‘The Watcher’ start pouring in, terrifying the Brannocks to breaking point as the neighborhood’s sinister secrets come to light.”
Executive producers also include Alexis Martin Woodall, Eric Kovtun, Bryan Unkeless, Eric Newman, Paris Barclay, Naomi Watts, Ariel Schulman, Henry Joost and Scoop Wasserstein.
Coolidge previously addressed feeling typecast by certain roles in her career before her Emmy-nominated role in “The White Lotus.”
“I was in this weird bubble for a long time. And it just goes to show that you really should hang on and not just keep repeating what you say, but I was always desperate for work,” Coolidge admitted. “Most of the time I thought, ‘I don’t know if I’ll ever get an offer again.'”
She added: “There was this very long period of repeating myself. There was a period when, except for the occasional Christopher Guest movie, the scripts that came to my door were a lot of gold digger roles. It was certain kinds of things that he had already done. I guess that’s what often happens to us unless we direct it in another way. I wish I had been more involved in managing my career. I just sat down, I was very passive.”
Now, Coolidge is exerting his control over a perhaps murderous Karen. You have to see it to believe it…
“The Watcher” premieres this fall on Netflix.
