Stevenson’s football team opens its home schedule Saturday at Mustang Stadium with a matchup against nationally ranked Salisbury as the Mustangs try to build on a 25-21 season-opening victory last week at Saint Vincent College.

The Sea Gulls arrive in Stevenson territory after a 49-0 victory against the Albright Lions. Both the Mustangs and Sea Gulls will take to the field on Saturday ready to fight.

Salisbury runs a unique old-school triple-option offense that could pose a threat to Stevenson’s defense.

Senior cornerback Charles Greer described the Sea Gulls’ offense as “Our [Stevenson football] most unique defensive assignment so far in my career here at Stevenson and we as a defense are excited to attack such an unorthodox challenge.

“We have always emphasized the basics of the triple option, even going into [football] camp, so our preparation has been extensive throughout our time as a team so far this fall,” Greer continued.

Against St. Vincent, the Mustangs led most of the game, but special teams (two missed extra points and a punt return allowed a touchdown) put Stevenson behind 21-19 in the fourth quarter. A late 64-yard touchdown drive, capped by Brandon Walker’s second touchdown, sealed the game for SU.

“I firmly believe that our offense and defense can match any team we face. It all comes down to our discipline and attention to detail,” Greer said.

The Stevenson-Salisbury game kicks off at 1 pm and is the Mustangs’ first home game this season. The outcome of the game, which will likely come down to a battle between offensive technique and defensive strength, will be an entertaining feat to witness.
