Emily Blunt, winner of the Critics Choice Awards (Mary Poppins Returns, A peaceful place) and Chaske Spencer (suffering soul) lead the cast of Prime Video’s English, a new Western series that has just released its first teaser trailer. The six-episode limited series, set in the late 19th century, will debut on November 11, 2022 (November 10 in the UK) with the release of the full season.
Hugo Blick (the honorable woman) created the series and serves as writer, director, and executive producer. In addition to Blunt and Spencer, English stars Stephen Rea (the shadow line), Valerie Pachner (a hidden life), Rafe Spall (The Salisbury Poisonings), Tom Hughes (A discovery of witches), Toby Jones (Wonderful), and Ciarán Hinds (The horror).
The series is a co-production of Amazon Studios and the BBC, with production by Drama Republic Ltd and Eight Rooks Ltd. Series star Emily Blunt is an executive producer along with Greg Brenman of Drama Republics.
“The opportunity to do a western with Emily Blunt and the cast is so delightful that I still wonder if it’s one of those weird dreams we all had during lockdown. If not, an exciting, romantic, epic equestrian opera is coming to your screen sometime next year, and I couldn’t be more excited,” said Hugo Blick.
Brad Beale, Vice President of Worldwide Licensing for Prime Video, said, “We’re excited to break new ground and bring English to Prime Video. We learn about Hugo Blick’s incredible story of love, loss and revenge, brought to life on screen by the talented Emily Blunt, Chaske Spencer and the entire cast of English – will captivate Prime members around the world.”
The BFI London Film Festival will host the world premiere of the series on October 15, 2022.
Prime Video released the following synopsis for the limited series:
The series takes the central themes of identity and revenge to tell a unique and compelling parable about race, power and love. An English aristocrat, Lady Cornelia Locke (Blunt), and a Pawnee cavalry scout, Eli Whipp (Spencer), team up in 1890 in the central United States to cross a violent landscape built on dreams and blood. Both have a clear sense of their destiny, but neither is aware that it is rooted in a shared past.
They must face increasingly terrifying obstacles that will test them to the limit, physically and psychologically. But as they overcome each obstacle, it brings them closer to their final destination: the new town of Hoxem, Wyoming. It is here, after an investigation by local sheriff Robert Marshall (Rea) and young widow Martha Myers (Pachner) into a series of bizarre and macabre unsolved murders, that the full extent of their intertwined history will be truly understood, and come face to face with the future they have to live.
