Quarterback Jack Gooch and wide receiver Ryan Martin continued their fantastic starts to the 2002 football season when Oak Park and River Forest High School defeated host Hinsdale South 42-7 on September 2.
Gooch connected with Martin on four touchdown passes (12, 28, 56 and 22 yards) as the Huskies (2-0) opened a 35-7 halftime lead.
Gooch finished the night going 16-of-23 for 191 yards, while Martin had seven receptions for 118 yards. The duo have combined for all six OPRF passing scores this year.
Eric Evans (5 carries, 89 yards) rushed for 23 yards and Sam Gray rushed for another as OPRF had 404 yards of total offense.
Defensively, Faris Dispensa had five tackles (including a tackle for loss), Kole Sneed 3.5 tackles (1 TFL) while Gray and Tim Spillane (1 TFL) each had three tackles as the Huskies held off the Hornets (0-2). at 126 yards. .
OPRF visits Glenbard West on September 10 at the opening of the West Suburban Conference Silver Division. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 pm at Duchon Field in Glen Ellyn.
Fenwick football thrashed Thornwood
The Fenwick High School football team bounced back from their Week 1 loss to OPRF in convincing fashion, defeating Thornwood 42-6 on September 2 at Triton College in River Grove.
After Will Gladden opened the scoring in the first quarter with a 2-yard run outside the wildcat formation, the Friars (1-1) exploded with 35 points in the second quarter. EJ Hosty threw a pair of 22-yard touchdown runs to Rowan White and Ninos Ameer, who Ameer added a pair of rushing touchdowns (10 yards, 7 yards).
Conor Stetz capped the outburst by recovering a Thunderbird fumble and rumbled into the end zone from 36 yards out.
Seamus Dunlap recorded a sack and Luke D’Alise and Nate Marshall each had a tackle for loss for Fenwick, who hosts Providence Catholic on September 9 at 7:30 p.m.
OPRF Women’s Volleyball at 9-2
The OPRF women’s volleyball team had another strong week, going 4-1 to improve their record to 9-2.
The Huskies posted a three-set win on August 30 over visiting Wheaton-Warrenville South, 21-25, 25-22, 25-23. Grace Nelson finished the match with an ace to cap off an outstanding effort: 19 kills, 9 digs and 2 aces.
Kinsey Smith added 30 assists and 13 digs; Reese Garland 6 kills and a block; Ella Hullinger 5 kills, 11 digs and one ace; Gabby Towns 4 kills; and Keira Kleidon 14 excavations.
OPRF then placed second in the Summer’s End tournament in New Trier on September 2 and 3. The Huskies went 3-0 on day one, beating St. Ignatius, Niles West and Niles North. On the second day, OPRF fell to the host Trevians in three sets 25-23, 13-25 and 15-17.
