Ohio State football coach Ryan Day’s contract extension also increases purchase amount

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The increased buyout amount in Ryan Day’s contract extension likely won’t be enough to scare off a college or NFL team that might want to sign him out of Ohio State.

But it would make doing it hurt a little more, at least for a couple of years.

Day’s contract originally called for a $2.5 million buyout amount for the next season if he left OSU, reducing by $500,000 each year thereafter. The new language increases the purchase amount to $5 million through January 31, 2023, reducing by $500,000 each year thereafter.

Cleveland.com received the details through an open records request.

Ohio State announced in May that Day had agreed to a contract extension increasing his annual compensation from $7.6 million to $9.5 million. The contract language totals $9.594 million for the current season and breaks down as follows:

• Base contract: $2 million

• Liabilities with the media: $5.24 million

• Supplemental Media: $1 million

• Nike Contract: $1,354

Day is eligible for media pay increases beginning February 1, 2023.

While the terms of the contract began on January 1, Day did not sign the agreement until August 31.
