Netflix Is So Proud Of Its ‘Cyberpunk Edgerunners’ NSFW Trailer, Which Looks Wild

Cyberpunk 2077 will always be a cautionary tale in the gaming industry going forward, but I don’t think the IP will be tarnished forever, between the base game being “fixed” and pretty funny now, and how CDPR is expanding the series to media right away. .

While things were radio silent on the Netflix Cyberpunk Edgerunners anime for a long time, it’s now only two weeks away from release and it’s being heavily hyped on Netflix.

The anime is from the famous Trigger studio, and Netflix is proudly advertising this new trailer as “NSFW” as if it were a CollegeHumor video from 2011 or something, but the implication is that the series itself will lean heavily towards being very “mature”. “with maybe a lot more graphic violence and nudity than even the game itself.

I’m going to link to the trailer here as I’m not sure I can insert something “NSFW” into my page here, but after watching it I’m impressed, just as I have been with all the other footage. that has already been shown.

What’s NSFW about it? Lots and lots of violence, people shot to pieces, at least a handful of beheadings. And for the sex, at least one brief shot of some sort of foursome, and another of full frontal nudity for a split second. It’s clear that the show has been given free rein to go where it wants.

Shock value aside, it really is a great trailer, and most people seem to agree. Everyone’s love for Trigger seems to be an overwhelming skepticism about Cyberpunk, and this new ad has 18,000 likes and only 300 or so dislikes on YouTube, a very solid ratio.

I know Netflix is hard to judge these days, but to me, this strikes me as something that will be an instant hit and will be renewed for multiple seasons, as I don’t think the plan was to make this one. -off miniseries (says it’s “independent”, but I thought it just meant separate from the game). We’ve seen great things from a lot of Netflix gaming anime, the gold standard is Castlevania, and while Cyberpunk Edgerunners looks a lot different than that, it could in theory find the same kind of success.

As CDPR has said, they really don’t want to let go of the Cyberpunk brand despite the shortcomings and controversies of the original game at launch. They’re currently working on a sprawling expansion to Cyberpunk 2077, due out next year, and while they’ll be going on hiatus after that to work entirely on a new Witcher game, I wouldn’t rule out a full “redemption” Cyberpunk sequel coming to life at some point. moment. in the future.

And who knows, Cyberpunk may also have a significant multimedia presence between this anime and other potential projects. Edgerunners hits Netflix on September 13, so get ready for more NSFW action.
