The northeastern Mexican state of Tamaulipas is a revelation destination thanks to its wide range of experiences and places to visit, according to Fernando Olivera Rocha, Secretary of Tourism of the Tamaulipas government.
The numbers back it up. From January to August 2022, Tamaulipas received more than 9.5 million local visitors, which is higher than the 9 million tourists who arrived in 2019, the previous record year.

The traveler can expect 400 kilometers of sun and sand, one million hectares of protected natural areas, 27,000 hotel rooms, a solid gastronomic offer, medical tourism and business services and amenities, among other qualities.
In the case of the coasts, Olivera Rocha said that “Tamaulipas is the destination with the cleanest beaches in all of Mexico.” She received the international Blue Flag distinction and recognition from Cofepris, the Mexican agency that evaluates the cleanliness of beaches.
In recognition of the correct cleaning practices, water quality and environmental management, Playa Miramar, the largest tourist area in Tamaulipas, received for the third consecutive time the international Blue Flag award granted by the Foundation for Environmental Education. This new achievement adds to the national certifications that Miramar has, in addition to being the first inclusive beach in the Gulf of Mexico.
Tamaulipas has an excellent infrastructure also for the groups and conventions segment. “We have four centers, which represent more than 30,000 square meters of exhibition floor,” said the secretary. And exceptional connectivity. Tampico is only 4.5 hours from Mexico City by road and, in addition, the state has five international airports.

In the next two decades, Mexico will be oriented towards the provision of services, for which cultural and natural resources are essential and impossible to replicate in other places, highlighted the Secretary of Tourism of Tamaulipas.
“Tourism is a sector that has not stopped growing in the last 50 years and, despite the pandemic, it was one of the activities that rebounded in economic income the fastest,” he said.
The head of the Tamaulipas Sectur pointed out that hunting and sport fishing tourism offers fabulous natural and cultural riches, such as beaches, canyons, a protected natural area, a critical archaeological zone and two wonderful Magical Towns: Tula and Mier. .
Another item to highlight is the crafts of the state: leather from Tamaulipas; crafts in ixtle, bamboo, wood and stone; the traditional huapilla, a drink made from the fruit of the same name; mezcal and craft beer, to mention a few products.
Olivera Rocha said that part of the attraction of Tamaulipas is also the delicious gastronomy. Visitors can enjoy different samples of local dishes, characterized by their flavor and freshness and for being the perfect fusion with endemic ingredients of the state. And she mentioned various dishes such as the frank-style crab, the kid, the flour flutes, theodorines, and the barda cake.
From the traditional cuisine of Tampico to the ancient recipes of the zacahuil, with the vitality of the prawns and the flavor of the crab, the cuisine of Tamaulipas is so extensive that the visitor can opt for seafood, meat, corn or different fusion cuisines that arose as a result from the influence of neighboring states: San Luis Potosí, Veracruz, Nuevo León, and even Texas in the US.
