Marvel has revealed the first look at the Halloween special werewolf at night at this year’s D23, coming to Disney+ on October 7. Based on the character of the werewolf Jack Russell, who made his debut in 1972. marvel projector #2 before starring in his own series werewolf at nightwhich ran for 43 issues until 1977.
The series was first announced in August 2021 and will be directed by Michael Giacchino, a composer whose work can be heard on Jurassic World: Dominion, batman, Y Spider-Man: No Way Home to name a few. Giacchino has previously directed a short film called monster challenge and an episode of Star Trek: short walks. Gael Garcia Bernal (Y Tu Mama Tambien) plays Jack Russell with Laura Donelly reportedly playing Elsa Bloodstone.
The synopsis for the Halloween special reads: “A new werewolf by night roams the Southwest, but all is not as it seems! A young man, a family curse, and an unholy experiment turn out to be a dangerous combination for a small town in Arizona.” All young Jake wants is to protect his people, but who will protect him from the monster within?
The trailer is in black and white and echoes the Hammer Horror era monster movies. A group of monster hunters gathers, apparently for some kind of challenge. Their host reveals that one of them is a monster disguised as a hunter, and who or what they are is a mystery. Frankenstein as Ulysses Bloodstone wishes them luck from his coffin, saying “I’ll rot for you.” The trailer is high-end and also offers a glimpse of what appears to be the fan-favorite character Man-Thing and the Time Variance Authority Minutemen seen in Loki.
The titular character of werewolf at night There have been two different characters in the comics. The first is Jack Russel, a cursed descendant of the werewolves who fought Dracula. This appears to be the version of the character we’re getting here. The second version of the character debuted in 2020 and was Jake Gomez, a Hopi Native American.
While it’s unclear if the special will be a stand-alone presentation or tie-in with future MCU releases, the special certainly looks different than anything Marvel has come up with before. With rumors possibly relating to Mahershala Ali’s debut as Sword and evidence of the appearance of Man-Thing, anything is possible. werewolf at night debuts on Disney+ on October 7.
