As Halloween approaches, a “creepy” couple from Malibu with long credit lists in the horror movie genre are back in the spotlight.
Heather Langenkamp Anderson is the long-time working actress who starred in the original movie “A Nightmare on Elm Street” and “A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors”, both supernatural horror movies. She and her husband, David LeRoy Anderson, run AFX Studio, which creates award-winning special makeup effects, often of creatures and aliens, for film and television. The couple first met at a wrap party and have been married since 1989.
Heather now has a recurring role in Netflix’s new series “The Midnight Club,” based on a 1994 horror novel. The story follows a group of terminally ill young adults at a hospice who begin meeting at midnight to share scary stories and making pacts to return after his death.
Langencamp plays the role of Dr. Georgina Stanton, the owner of the hospice.
“She’s very mysterious and enigmatic,” Heather explained in a personal interview. “She offers dying adolescents and young people an environment of freedom, to live their lives as they would like, even if they have to refuse some life-saving treatments. It’s really about living life to the fullest: having control over your own life every day.”
The frightening and supernatural stories told by young people at midnight make up many of the show’s episodes, with Heather and the other actors playing various characters in the stories.
During the interview, Heather agreed to leave The Malibu Times announce the big reveal about his secret identity. For the past six years, she has been a DJ on KBUU 99.1 Malibu radio, under the pseudonym “Sandy Bottoms”. There, the secret is out!
On her radio show, Heather mixes her favorite music from the 1970s, ’80s, and ’90s, interspersing it with commentary on current events in and around Malibu, covering the beaches, the mountains, and “the general eclectic community of a small village”. Speaking of everything from Malibu High School plays to the annual Pie Festival to wildlife fundraisers, “Sandy” tells everyone how they can get involved in Malibu’s civic and cultural life.
His show, “Off the Lip,” airs Sundays at 1 pm on KBUU 99.1.
Langenkamp’s husband, David LeRoy Anderson, has won two Academy Awards for Best Makeup for his work on “Men in Black” (1997) and “The Nutty Professor” (1996). He won two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup for a Series, Limited Series, Movie or a Special for his work on “American Horror Story” in 2015 and 2017.
He’s making his latest contribution to the realm of creepiness by creating makeup and special effects for two characters in Guillermo del Toro’s new anthology miniseries “The Cabinet of Curiosities” on Netflix.
“All of the stories are stand-alone and not linked,” David explained. “They’re horror versions of ‘The Twilight Zone,'” Anderson said. “It was super exciting to participate in this project; and meeting Guillermo was the highlight of my career.” Guillermo is a big fan of makeup effects, and he knew my name and my work. I have never been so impressed by the stars, but he really wanted me there. He asked me about my process and he was excited to hear our ideas.”
David’s first job was to take comedic actress Kate Micucci and “turn her into something hideous and seemingly ugly with big teeth, a lazy eyeball, and disgusting rashes.”
The other character she had to design makeup for was dubbed “the lotion lady,” a tall, slim woman with periwinkle-colored lotion running in slow motion across her body. She had to design a special silicone suit from head to toe with a “face” that she could take off and put back on. Some of her performances had to be done “blind” because she couldn’t see. And the lotion they developed was very cold, so they had to create a “hot tent” for her to stand on.
“It was a bad periwinkle dream,” David laughed.
Heather Langenkamp Anderson’s “The Midnight Club” begins streaming Oct. 6 on Netflix; and all eight episodes of “Cabinet of Curiosities” begin streaming October 25 on Netflix. David’s makeup appears in the episode “The Outside”.
