No. 1 Alabama makes its redemption tour to Austin, Texas on Saturday to battle Texas in the first meeting between the two college football powerhouses since the 2010 BCS Championship Game. Crimson Tide just beat Utah State 55-0, while the Longhorns outscored ULM 52-10 in the first game with redshirt freshman and former five-star prospect Quinn Ewers under center.
This matchup is a big game for Texas and their goal is to get back on the national stage under second-year coach Steve Sarkisian. The former Alabama offensive coordinator is looking to become the third former Nick Saban assistant to surpass the legendary coach after Texas A&M’s Jimbo Fisher and Georgia’s Kirby Smart became the first two coaches to accomplish that feat when they gave Saban his only two losses of the 2021 season.

How will Ewers handle the pressure?: This is only the second significant game in Ewers’ career, and it doesn’t get any bigger than this. A big question ahead of the matchup is how Ewers will handle relentless pressure from a Crimson Tide defense that had five tackles to lose last week against the Aggies. He had 225 yards, two touchdowns and an interception last week against the Warhawks and completed 66.7% of his passes. How will he handle a face full of EDGE superstar threat Will Anderson Jr.? He has the guns out to get the job done, but his offensive line allowed five tackles for loss last game, tied for sixth in the Big 12 after Week 1.
Sequel to Bryce Young’s Heisman: The Crimson Tide’s star quarterback got off to a great start against Utah State when he threw for 195 yards, threw for five touchdowns, rushed for 100 yards and scored a touchdown on the ground. It was a stellar start for Young, but it wasn’t like it was a big stage. This game will be different. The entire college football world will be tuning in to this one, and it’s a perfect place for Young to make another statement considering the struggles the Longhorns have had on the defensive side of the ball for more than the first year of the Sarkisian era.
A game that defines the program?: Sarkisian downplayed the importance of this game in regards to his 2022 goal of reaching the Big 12 Championship Game, as it will not count towards his conference record. However, he left the door open that this could be a game that defines the show. But what does that mean? It is simple. “Texas is back” has become something of a sarcastic joke as he has essentially been “down” since losing to the Tide in the title game over a decade ago. However, a win over the defending SEC champions and the top-ranked team in the country, especially considering the two will be conference foes for the near future, will be a huge statement for the rest of the college football world.

It boils down to a simple question: Can Alabama’s defense make Young nervous? Alabama’s offensive line has been a constant problem, and it’s hard to tell if it’s fixed after a game against Utah State. That said, the Longhorns’ defense has been brutal for quite some time, but they only gave up 4.05 yards per play and had eight tackles for loss last week. I have more faith in Young than I do in the Texas defense, and the reigning Heisman Trophy winner should take the Crimson Tide into coverage … even if he’s in the trash at the end of the fourth quarter.
