Week 1 of the Iowa high school football season is in the rear view mirror and what a week it was.
We had a bunch of ranked matchups, with the highlight being the No. 1 Class 5A from Southeast Polk topping the No. 4 Dowling Catholic. There were plenty of upsets, with the biggest upset coming as previously unranked Liberty came into Kinnick and took down No. 5 Upper Town. The number one preseason team in our Super 10, Ankeny, was down at the half before coming back for a big win.
If week 2 is like last week, we’re in for a treat tonight. Before kickoff, catch up on all of our coverage of Week 1, including updated standings and a long list of things we learned from the opening weekend of soccer in the state.
What you need to know for Week 2
6:20 p.m. No. 5Urbandale breaks the deadlock
The J-hawks were heavily favored over Johnston heading into this one, but Johnston’s defense has held strong. But Urbandale finally found the end zone just before halftime. Jackson Baethke blocked a punt by Johnston and Jordan Sturdivant collected the ball in the end zone for the first points of the night.
J-hawks lead 7-0 at halftime.
6:15 p.m. Greene County at Perry
Wide receiver Jesse Miller caught a 30-yard pass for the first touchdown of the night statewide by my count. That score puts the Rams up 10-0.
5:30 pm Rain rain disappears
Some schools have moved up their start time to 5:30 instead of the traditional 7:00 pm to try to get the game started before the predicted bad weather hits. No. 5 Urbandale has just started against Johnston. However, Ballard extended his kick time against ADM by just 30 minutes, moving it from 7:30 to 7:00.
What we are covering in Week 2
Veteran high school reporter Cody Goodwin (@CodyGoodwin) will be just southwest of town in Van Meter to watch the top-ranked Class 1A Bulldogs take on Class 2A No.1 Williamsburg. The Raiders made a statement last week, allowing less than 30 yards of offense and shutting out previously ranked Iowa City Regina 31-0. High School Recruiting/Sports Reporter Alyssa Hertel (@AlyssaHertel) will be in town checking out 1-0 Roosevelt as they take on Waukee at Drake University. The Warriors had a 7-0 halftime lead against preseason No. 1 Ankeny last week but couldn’t hold on, losing 26-7.
Joe Randleman (@JoeRandleman) is in a top 10 matchup between Class 3A No. 4 Nevada and 2A No. 7 West Marshall. Both teams dominated last week, winning by more than 30 points each. Raven Moore (@Raven_xreport) will be in Mount Vernon to watch the Mustangs take on Class 3A No. 3 Solon, a state semifinalist in 2021.
Finally, Matt Levins will be near the Iowa/Illinois border to watch Keokuk take on Burlington. The Grayhounds were a playoff team a season ago, but lost in their first game last week. However, they ousted Keokuk easily in 2021 and walked away with a 42-14 win.
In addition to reporters tonight, we’ll also have staff photographers capturing the best images of the action across the state.
And I’ll be pulling from them and from social media to give you everything you need to know about what’s happening in Iowa high school football tonight.
