The ending of Netflix’s latest thriller I Came By is full of unanswered questions, leaving viewers on the edge of their seats wondering, “What happens at the end of I Came By?” Read on to see the ending of I Came By on Netflix explained.
I Came By has captivated viewers with its cat and mouse story that guides viewers around twists and turns until they are completely lost and confused, unsure of what exactly happens at the end of the movie.
The story, written and directed by Babak Anvari, follows politically motivated graffiti artists Toby, played by George MacKay, and his best friend Jay Agassi, Percelle Ascott. The pair regularly break into the homes of wealthy Londoners and write the tagline, ‘I Came By’ on their walls to protest inequality in the city.
But a routine interruption leaves Toby’s life hanging in the balance, and viewers watch as his life begins to unravel after inadvertently discovering a terrifying secret: the owner of the house has a prisoner in the basement.
Downton Abbey’s Hugh Bonneville stars as the “victim” of this fateful break-in, Sir Hector Blake, a retired High Court judge with dark secrets he’s determined to keep hidden, no matter the cost.
Throughout the film, Toby fights to protect himself and do the right thing, but his discovery has dire consequences for him and those close to him, including his mother Lizzie and his best friend, Jay.
I Came By on Netflix: explanation of the ending
The ending of Netflix’s I Came By is set months after Toby and his mother Lizzie disappeared at the hands of Hector. With the authorities oblivious to where the mother and son are, or what exactly happened to them, Toby’s best friend Jay tracks down Hector and decides to get revenge.
Jay’s plan doesn’t go as well as expected, but luckily he gets the upper hand in his fight with Hector and even manages to carry out Toby’s original wish, freeing the prisoner, Ravi, from Hector’s house.
At the end of the movie, the police arrive and see Ravi in the driveway waiting to be rescued. Inside Hector’s house, Jay leaves the killer judge bound and gagged, ready to be taken into custody and have some very, very serious time. But Jay doesn’t stay, not wanting to be associated with such a horrendous event, and instead vanishes, hoping to get back to his girlfriend and his baby.
Just before the movie ends, viewers see Hector duct-taped to the corner of the room with the words “Passed” painted on the wall.
While the police have the killer and one of his living victims on their hands, Hector’s many friends on the police force are able to help him avoid punishment for the many crimes he has committed. So what will happen to him and his victims? Nobody currently knows…
Does Lizzie die in I Came By?
Lizzie is supposed to die in I Came By, but the fact cannot be pinpointed; At the very least, something sinister definitely happened to her.. After Toby goes missing, Toby’s mother Lizzie is determined to find out what’s been going on in order to locate her son.
Lizzie, with Jay’s help, realizes Toby is linked to Hector and begins following the judge for clues. However, she doesn’t realize how dangerous the game she is playing is, and she is soon added to Hector’s blacklist.
After a game of cat and mouse, similar to the one her son went through, Lizzie finds herself in Hector’s basement as the judge descends on her. Later in the film, viewers see Lizzie’s driver’s license burning, a sign that she has met a ghastly fate, but it is unclear whether that fate was death or some other sinister story.
Does Toby die in I Came By?
Yes, at the end of I Came By, Toby dies. Towards the end of Netflix’s I Came By, Toby decides that something must be done to save the life of the man in the basement. He decides to call the police and anonymously reports the sinister find.
To Toby’s dismay, the police go to investigate but find nothing of interest and leave. Dissatisfied and shocked by the police’s lack of interest in the prisoner in Hector’s basement, Toby decides that he must intervene.
Toby breaks into Hector’s house once more to get the man out, but Hector is aware of the plot and ends up killing the young tagger. To solidify the fact that Toby is dead, having murdered his victim, Hector places Toby’s body in a ceramic kiln and flushes the resulting ashes down the toilet.
Could there be a sequel to I Came By?
At the time of writing, there is no news of a sequel to I Came By.. This lack of announcement is hardly surprising, as the film has just dropped on Netflix and its success has yet to be definitively determined.
Without letting people down too much, it should be noted that Hugh Bonneville, whose character is a major part of this film, has a packed schedule at the moment, with the actor currently working on four separate film projects. The likelihood of him fitting in in time for an I Came By sequel is highly unlikely.
However, there is a possibility that this story will continue. The way things end, with many unanswered questions, offers an opportunity for more character development and twists and turns in the story. Jay may take the mantle of Toby’s crown as the graffiti artist, or he may have to run away after a fight with Hector.
Hector’s fate is also left up in the air at the end of I Came By, meaning a sequel could follow the killer’s path to redemption, prison, or even revenge in the wrong place.
Where was I Came By filmed?
I Came By was filmed entirely in Greater London and Surrey. In an interview with Yahoo News UK, Percelle Ascott expressed her excitement at being able to film on familiar streets. Both he and his co-star George MacKay grew up in London and this enhanced their connections with their London-born characters.
Said Ascott, “There was one place in particular that was a school my grandfather went to, so again it was nice to have that experience of filming in its London.
“We were talking about where these guys were from and finding that London, and really talking about the kind of background graffiti and all the kinds of choices these characters make, basically.”
George MacKay added: “London feels like the perfect setting because we all live on top of each other and intertwined. That melting pot feels particularly true in this city.”
