player of the week

The stats weren’t great for Portage Northern quarterback Cane Mack in his first season as the starting quarterback, but perhaps the number that hurt the most was the Huskies’ 3-6 record during his junior season.

The transition from wide receiver to starting quarterback isn’t easy, but the 6-foot-4, 215-pound signal-caller has always had the physical tools to be great, and now he’s more comfortable in the pocket.

Thanks in part to his offensive line’s excellent protection, Mack held a clinic in Week 1 against Vicksburg that not only led Northern to a 41-27 win, but also helped him capture Player of the League honors. Week.

Mack’s 9,641 votes were good for 22 percent of the total and he edged out Centerville senior quarterback Jacob Sikanas, who finished with 20.1 percent of the vote.

The future Wayne State quarterback completed 8 of 13 passes for 218 yards, including touchdown passes of 25 and 62 yards, while adding 39 yards and a score on 14 carries to guide Northern to their highest point total. since 2020.

Northern will have a tough test in Week 2 as the Huskies travel to Holland West Ottawa for the Panthers’ first home game inside their new state-of-the-art stadium, sure to draw a huge crowd.

West Ottawa snapped a 26-game losing streak last week with a 27-16 win over Grand Rapids Northview, so while the Panthers don’t have the longest success story, they do have some confidence and a level-of-mind coach. championship at Pat Collins. , who led Montague to state titles in 2008, 2009 and 2020.

The Huskies will certainly have their work cut out for them, but another big game from Mack would go a long way to a 2-0 start.
