Indian streamer Disney+ Hotstar has struck another deal with Bollywood director, producer and talk show host Karan Johar, a highlight of its latest content slate revealed today at the D23 expo.
The agreement with Johar will include the eighth season of the talkshow Coffee with Karan and drama series Show time.
Coffee with Karan it has been running since 2004, originally on Star World India and now on Disney+ Hotstar. It comes from Johar’s Dharmatic Entertainment and is produced by Johar, Apoorva Mehta and Aneesha Baig. The show features popular Indian celebrity guests, games, and a steamy round of rapid fire.
Show time, for its part, also comes from Dharmatic and is produced by Johar, Mehta and Somen Mishra. The show follows the off-camera fights and power struggles that go on behind the scenes in Bollywood. The synopsis states that it is “a deep, raw, open and uninhibited look at the battle lines that are drawn and crossed to keep the camera rolling and the audience applauding”.
Johar said, “I am excited to partner with Disney+ Hotstar for our new collaboration, announced at the prestigious D23 Expo. Plus another exciting season of my beloved show Coffee with KaranI am pleased to announce a new series from Dharma Production, Show timewhich will raise the curtain on the biggest trade secrets in the Indian entertainment industry.”
Also revealed today at D23 Mahabharata, which is from producer Madhu Mantena, Mythoversestudios, and Allu Entertainment. The series is based on an ancient Indian epic tale of the conflict between Dharma and Adharma, manifested through the succession battle between the Pandava and Kaurava princes.
Gaurav Banerjee, Chief Content Officer, Disney+ Hotstar and HSM Entertainment Network, Disney Star introduced the shows when he appeared on an international content panel alongside Rebecca Campbell, President of International Content and Operations, The Walt Disney Company; Fernando Barbosa, SVP, Media Distribution & Prod., Latin America; Jessica Kam-Engle, Head of Content and Development, APAC; and Lee Mason, Director of Scripted Content, EMEA.
The discussion focused on eclectic global content trends, with a particular focus on Disney+ Hotstar’s role in shaping content in India and beyond. Disney+ Hotstar is the market leader in India’s competitive streaming market.
