CJ Stroud Gives Ohio State Football Team $500 Gift Cards To “Fly” Before Notre Dame Game

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Part of being a quarterback is being a team leader, which also means occasionally giving gifts, and CJ Stroud is starting the season doing it.

Stroud announced after practice that he would be giving the entire Ohio State football team $500 gift cards from the clothing company Express to purchase suits before Saturday’s game against Notre Dame.

“Make sure you actually get some suits,” Stroud said in front of the team. “Watch fly. Make sure we all look good as a team.”

Stroud and wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba signed a Name, Image and Likeness deal with Express in the offseason and have already done some publicity stuff this summer. The team gift cards are the latest example of the company partnering with athletes for publicity, while also providing a way for Stroud to make a kind gesture to his teammates.

“I’ve been impressed with his approach (and) his maturity,” Day said. “That’s just one example of something he wanted to do. Nobody asked me to do that and he surprised me. that’s brotherhood and that’s what it’s all about.

“You don’t normally come to Ohio State for the guys on the team. A lot of times, you don’t even know who the guys on the team are when you’re here. But then once you’re here, why you play so hard, what motivates you or your teammates shows you in a short amount of time how close this team has become and what CJ really is. He has become a leader.”

Ohio State has often worn suits on game days, but has embraced more casual tracksuit attire in the past two seasons. Stroud’s gift suggests we could see the team return to formal appearance on Saturday for the primetime game against the Irish.
