Bengaluru: Karnataka Home Minister Araga Jnanendra said on Friday that a misunderstanding that had arisen between two groups resulted in the incident at the madrasah in Bidra during the Dusshera festivities, after which four people were detained. A case has been registered against nine people in connection with the case, police said.
Jnanendra further said that a case has been registered against those involved in the Bidar mosque violence and the law and order situation is now under control. “Every year they do Dusshera Puja in the madrasah as there is a Shami tree there. This time there were more people who entered the madrasah and thus it resulted in a misunderstanding. Usually five or six people used to go, but this time more people entered the madrassa,” said Jnanendra.
He further said that a case has been registered against those involved in the violence in Bidar and the law and order situation is now under control.
On Thursday, nine people were booked for allegedly breaking into the Mahmud Gawan Madrasah, a heritage site in Karnataka’s Bidar district, and allegedly performing Puja on its premises.
The incident took place after a group from the local Dussehra procession broke into the madrasa. After the incident, a complaint was filed by a certain Syed Mubashir Ali the same day after the police registered a first information report (FIR) against nine people and said that an FIR had filed a complaint against those involved.
He said that the incident occurred in the presence of the police, during the Bhavani Devi procession and demanded action against the perpetrators.
“They came to our Mosque today and will enter our houses one day. Who will take care of our security? The women of our houses go away to study, who takes care of guaranteeing their security? People are furious here. The administration has to respond with its own action,” Mubashir said.
People from the local Muslim community staged a protest demanding action.
The protesters dispersed after being assured of the strict action by the Additional Superintendent of Police, Mahesh Meghannanavar, and other officials.
Mahesh Meghannavar told reporters that the nine were booked on charges of trespassing on the estate structure.
“A case has been registered against 9 members who have not yet been arrested. The incident occurred within the confines of the city police office, but now the situation is under control,” ASP said.
All-India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi took to Twitter and lashed out at the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the incident.
“Images from the historic Mahmud Gawan masjid & madrasa, Bidar, #Karnataka (Oct 5). Extremists broke the lock on the door and tried to desecrate it. @bidar_police @BSBommai how can you allow this to happen? BJP is promoting such activity just to degrade Muslims,” he said.
The madrasa is a heritage building maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). (AND ME)
