Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie may have recently made headlines for a dark chapter in their romantic relationship, but fans of the couple and their happier beginnings are heading to Netflix to see them in the movie rumored to have started it all: Mr and Mrs Smith. The movie recently landed on the streaming platform and has since quickly risen to the top spot as the #3 most watched movie in the US. Packed with action and an intriguing love story, there is a lot to like about the movie from 2005.
The show centers on the lives of John (Brad Pitt) and Jane Smith (Angelina Jolie), a married couple who find themselves stuck in their boring marriage. Unbeknownst to their other half, they both work as highly trained assassins and have been tasked with taking down the same target, Benjamin Danz (Adam Brody). As their secret lives become not so secret, the two find themselves at loggerheads as they soon become the target of each other’s hit, proving to really liven things up.
The Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie-directed feature would receive a mixed bag of reviews from critics, currently sitting at a 60% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Grossing more than $478 million, the performance would mark, at the time, the highest-grossing film for both Jolie and Pitt’s careers. It would also mark the beginning of the romantic relationship between its stars, which led Pitt to file for divorce from Jennifer Anniston, a scandal that really shook the United States.
As a matter of fate, the casting of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie almost did not take place. Pitt was first going to star opposite Nicole Kidman before both actors dropped out. Will Smith, Johnny Depp, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Cate Blanchett were all considered for the lead roles, but when Gwyneth Paltrow signed on, Brad Pitt rejoined. Of course, Paltrow would eventually jump ship, leaving the spot open for Angelina Jolie.
Since then, it’s been a rocky road for Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie with the couple’s love affair going through several bumps in the 2010s. Jolie filed a troubling claim against her then-husband in 2016, the details of which have just been made public. . The accusations state that during a flight, Pitt verbally and physically assaulted Jolie and several of her children.
The couple would eventually sign divorce papers in 2019. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s hearing was held behind closed doors and many of the details were kept from the public eye. Pitt was awarded 50-50 custody rights to the couple’s children.
Like many great Hollywood productions of yesteryear, Mr and Mrs Smith. you will soon receive a reboot. Stepping into the roles once played by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie will be Donald Glover (atlanta) and Maya Erskine (pen15). As of now, the title does not have a release window.
With the successful broadcast of Mr and Mrs SmithIt’s clear that fans want to go back in time and see the former couple’s early days. While Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s romance may have fizzled out, we’ll always get the exciting first few days through the action feature.
