blonde release date
The movie will have its world premiere at the 79th Venice Film Festival on September 8, 2022. It will then have a limited theatrical release in New York on September 16 and in other states on September 23. Blonde will finally stream on Netflix starting Wednesday, September 28.
The film has been rated NC-17 due to its graphic sexual content, making it the first film with the rating to be released on a streaming service. Speaking about this development, writer-director Andrew Dominik said: “It’s a demanding movie. If the audience doesn’t like it, that’s the audience’s damn problem. It is not running for public office.”
Ana de Armas, who steps into Monroe’s shoes for the film, also expressed her disappointment, saying, “I don’t understand why it happened. I can name a number of shows or movies that are much more explicit and have much more sexual content than Blond. But to tell this story, it’s important to show all those moments in Marilyn’s life that led to the end she had. It needs to be explained.”
The film is a reimagining of Monroe’s life story
Blonde is sure to explore the intricate details of Monroe’s personal and professional life. The narrative will have fictional elements incorporated as envisioned by Joyce Carol Oates and Andrew Dominik.
The official synopsis for the film reads: “Discover a life both known and unknown in this boldly imaginative film from director Andrew Dominik that explores the complicated life of Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe.”
Ana de Armas stars as the Hollywood icon
The film will star Ana de Armas as Marlyn Monroe, Adrien Brody as Arthur Miller, Bobby Cannavale as Joe DiMaggio, Xavier Samuel as Charles Chaplin Jr., Julianne Nicholson as Gladys Pearl Baker, Caspar Phillipson as John F. Kennedy, Toby Huss as Allan “Whitey” Snyder Y Sara Paxton as Miss Flynn.
Other cast members will include David Warshofsky as Darryl F. Zanuck., Evan Williams as Edward G. Robinson Jr., Michael Masini as Tony Curtis, and Luke Whoriskey as James Dean.
Speaking about his preparation for the role, Armas said in an interview: “We worked on this movie for hours, every day for almost a year. I read Joyce’s novel, studied hundreds of photographs, videos, audio recordings, movies, whatever I could get my hands on. Each scene is inspired by an existing photograph.”
She continued, “We thoroughly examined every detail of the photo and discussed what was happening in it. The first question was always: ‘What was Norma Jeane feeling here?’ We wanted to tell the human side of her story.”
