Some movies from the 80s and 90s have become cult classics, and one of them is ‘American Gigolo’, starring Richard Gere. Gere left many swooning with his charm and appeal. Now, Showtime is creating a series based on the film with Jon Bernthal taking over the role of Gere from the previous film.

The series, based on Paul Schrader’s “American Gigolo,” is executive produced by David Hollander, Jerry Bruckheimer, Jonathan Littman and KristieAnne Reed. Paramount Global Distribution Group will distribute the series. The official synopsis reads: “American Gigolo, a contemporary reimagining of the iconic 1980 film, follows Julian Kaye (Jon Bernthal) after his wrongful 15-year prison sentence as he navigates his complicated relationships with ex-lover Michelle (Gretchen Mol), his troubled mother and the people who betrayed him. While Julian struggles to reconcile the bodyguard he once was and the man he is today, Detective Sunday (Rosie O’Donnell) searches for the truth about the murder that sent Julian to prison all those years ago, uncovering a much bigger conspiracy along the way.” We still have to know how the series will turn out, however, Bruckheimer has a lot to tell. In an interview with TV Insider, Bruckheimer said, “The idea that sparked everyone’s imagination was the notion of Julian as some kind of Rip Van Winkle who emerges in a world he doesn’t recognize. He wants to forget about the past, and Sunday wants to solve the case (of who hired the killer). The investigation threatens secrets people have been keeping for years.”

“Julian’s previously untold backstory unfolds in flashbacks (Gabriel LaBelle plays the character when he was young). So does his reimagined love story with Michelle Stratton (Gretchen Mol). As we catch up with her today, “This wife of a tech billionaire (Leland Orser) is busy numbing the pain of an unhappy marriage when her teenage son goes missing. She must face very difficult truths,” Bruckheimer added, teasing tantalizing details about the show.

Either way, Bernthal is sure to fascinate you. “Jon can be charming, dangerous, emotionally intense and tender. That air of unpredictability is what we wanted for Julian,” said Bruckheimer.
