The classic 1929 war novel by Erich Maria Remarque All quiet on the western front will soon have a new adaptation on Netflix. The famous book was first published in 1928 by a German newspaper before receiving a book form in January of the following year.

All quiet on the western front it was a highly controversial novel at the time due to its anti-war themes, which led to the book being banned in Europe. Since its release, Remarque’s story has been adapted several times, most notably by Lewis Milestone in 1930. Milestone’s adaptation won the Academy Award for Best Picture.

German director Edward Berger (whose previous work includes Germany 83, Patrick MelroseY Your Honor) will revive the novel for Netflix, based on a screenplay he co-wrote with Lesley Paterson and Ian Stokell.

The film will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival before hitting theaters in Germany on September 29. Following its debut in German theaters, the film will also be released in theaters in select global markets before streaming on Netflix October 28. Felix Kammerer will play the main character, Paul Bäumer, a volunteer who joins the war effort alongside his classmates, unaware of the horrors and tragedy he is about to face in the trenches. Daniel Brühl also stars.
