AFL star Gary Ablett Jr will play a game with the Palmerston Magpies of the NT Football League

AFL legend Gary Ablett Jr will play his first semi-pro football game since his retirement, playing in the Northern Territory league later this year.

Northern Territory Football League (NTFL) club Palmerston Magpies announced today that Ablett had signed to play one match for the club, at their stadium on Friday 18 November.

The match, which is part of the eighth round of the league season, will be against St Mary’s, the current first division team.

Palmerston Magpies coach Josh Heath said he was a “marquee chip” for the league.

“We expect to fill the stadium,” he said.

“We call everyone and anyone who is interested in football [to come].

“You don’t have to be a Palmerston fan to go out and see one of the best players. So we hope that everyone near Cazalys Arena is here to watch.”

Magpies chairman Russell Davey confirmed that the club had made a contribution to Ablett’s foundation for his signing, but did not reveal how much.
