The blues of a jazzman is the passion project of Tyler Perry, who wrote the film in 1995. “I wrote it in 1995. It was the first script I ever wrote. The two characters are just trying to find their own way in the world. Initially, I wanted to play the lead role of Bayou, but that was in 1995, I got old,” Perry said in an interview.

Now he hopes the film strikes a chord with the audience. “This is the first thing I wrote and I have waited a long time to do it. But it’s happening at the right time because it was meant to be done by Solea Pfeiffer and Joshua Boone, and it gave me time to grow as a director,” the writer-director said.
