At the National Games on Thursday, Aakarshi Kashyap from Chattisgarh and B Sai Praneeth from Telangana put on outstanding performances to win the gold medal in women’s and men’s singles badminton respectively. Unlike Praneeth, a former world championships bronze medalist, who fought hard to defeat Karnataka’s Mithun Manjunath in the men’s singles final, Aakarshi Kashyap won her last meeting against top seed Malvika Bansod in straight sets with a score of 21-8, 22-20.
In a lopsided final, the Telangana duo of N Sikki Reddy and Gayatri Gopichand defeated national champions Ashwini Bhat and Shikha Gautam in straight sets by the score of 21-14, 21-11 to clinch women’s doubles gold. Meanwhile, the men’s doubles gold was won by the Keralan team of PS Ravikrishna and Sankarprasad Udaykumar who defeated Hariharan Amsakarunan and R Ruban Kumar by a score of 21-19, 21-19. Ashwini Ponnappa and K Sai Prateek of Karnataka won their first tournament gold as a mixed doubles duo with ease, defeating Rohan Kapoor and Kanika Kanwal of Delhi 21-16, 21-13.
Sangeeta’s performance allowed Haryana to win four of the five gold medals available in the recurve division. Sangeeta, 22, won the women’s singles competition on Thursday beating Anshika Singh, a young goalkeeper from Jharkhand with a score of 6-2 (28-25, 26-23, 24-25, 28-26). Later, Sangeeta teamed up with Bhajan Kaur and Preeti to defeat the three star-studded Jharkhand of Komalika Bari, Ankita Bhakat and Dipti Kumari 5-4 (28-27 tiebreaker) in a fiercely contested women’s team summit match. Atanu Das secured Haryana’s continued dominance in archery by winning the coveted gold medal in the men’s individual recurve bow.
