17-year-old teen arrested for bringing gun to high school football game in Auburn Hills, police say

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – A 17-year-old has been arrested for bringing a gun to a high school football game in chestnut hillsresulting in the cancellation of a postgame dance, authorities said.

Gun found behind building

Auburn Hills police were on duty at the Avondale Vs. Holly around 7:30 p.m. Thursday (September 1) when an officer noticed three children walking toward the stadium’s main entrance, according to authorities.

When the children saw the officer, they quickly turned around and went behind a small building next to the parking lot, police said.

The officer investigated what they were doing and found a loaded 9mm pistol in a small bag under some bricks, according to officials.

Authorities located the three children, who had entered the stadium. They were detained for questioning during the game, police said.

17 year old arrested

When police reviewed surveillance video from the area, they realized the three boys had not been responsible for bringing the bag with the gun, according to authorities.


It was determined that the person who brought the weapon was a 17-year-old male. pontiacofficials said. He was detained at his home and interviewed with his father present, authorities said.

He is not a student at Avondale High School or Holly High School, according to police.

The teen was taken to Children’s Village pending review for possible criminal charges.

Authorities said the gun had previously been reported stolen from another state.

A school dance originally scheduled to take place after the high school football game was canceled due to the incident, authorities said.

“We are grateful for the diligence of our police officers and Avondale High School staff in coordinating an appropriate response to this incident,” Auburn Hills police said in a statement. “There is zero tolerance for anyone who chooses to bring a firearm into our schools illegally. All available resources will be used to bring those responsible to justice and ensure that our schools remain a safe environment for all. We also thank the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in this case and for helping us apprehend the minor.”
