View Full Version : Belts Squealing...why?

What makes them do this...it's freaking embarassing. I got in my car yesterday and cranked it up and they were squealing like crazy. It wasn't cold (mid-60s) nor was it wet (sometimes they squeal briefly when water gets on them). What else causes them to squeal?

they are just loose, you have Aluminum pulleys so they are more prone to slip. Just tighten them up, and do E Love's while your at it, his lazy ass has been squealing for like 6months. It takes a 14mm and 12mm sockets, extension and ratchet. You also have to remove the undertray to get to the adjusting bolts

Oh and about it being random, have you noticed if you have A/C on when it happens? Its either happening when the Compressor comes on or when your Alternator loads up.

I knew you'd post about me haha. I need to change my oil soon so I'll knock out both at the same time. This will be the THIRD time I've tightened these belts since I replaced them >:o

They work off a manual tensioner? Figured they would be on a auto tensioner...which sucks.
Making sure to turn off your A/C helps a lot.

I think you just aren't getting them tight enough, properly tight on our cars almost seems to tight.

Yes we have 2 manual tensioners, one for each belt
:+1: for the time being if you want to keep it from squealing make sure all your AC and accessories are off (headlights/radio etc) when cranking. Let it idle with everything off for a minute then turn them on. For AC, wait until your driving.

I only have one belt though.. or is that an HR thing?

Hmm i guess it is... I guess ive never looked at belts on an HR, so one belt runs everything inlcuding AC? We have a seperate belt on the driverside just for the AC.

I guess that explains why a DE Crank pulley wont work on an HR

Yup makes sense. As far as I know we just have one "drive belt."
And that's another win for the HR! =P :roflomg: :stfu2:

Nope, actually a loss! because of all the load from the compressor our AC belt is the only that breaks most of the time, like mine did. When this happens it doesnt affect anything but the AC, when you break your belt you lose your Alternator and powersteering. Just another way nissan found to cut costs :owned:

meh, maybe. But it looks cleaner to only have one belt. And I watch the HR forum very closely and have yet to hear of anyone breaking a belt..
Maybe our A/C compressor is better or maybe we have a higher quality belt. :p
Btw just saw your sig.. lol. I gotta find a TT HR around here to come show you what's up!

Mine broke at 80k so HRs just haven't gotten there yet
You better be finding one quick;)

LOL well doesn't your service manual tell you to replace it around 60k? Maybe it's around 80k.. I'm not sure.

Mustangs have serpentine belts...pain in the ass. I always had belt slip issues.
LSx motors have two belts, I like that set up a lot better. Makes for removing the A/C a lot easier, as well as removes general 'drag' load from the main belt.

Corvettes have issues with the crank pulley and harmonic balancers though

While researching something else i found this pic, for informative reasons i figured id post this up.
The HR does have just one drive belt, the accessory orientation is the same as the DE just driven by one belt, and the HRs also have a auto tensioner vs the dual manual tensioners of the DE

Finally got around to tightening mine before I went outta town last weekend. It's awesome to crank the car up in the parking lot without that irritating squeeling noise :D
