Ok so I am building a custom fiberglass box for my coupe just thought i would post some pics of the progress let me know what you guys think! It should be finished soon hopefully just got to keep putting on fiberglass layers.
Ok so here are the newest pictures that I just snapped with my Iphone I might put some more of the shell up later that I took with a real camera dont know yet but here is the shell after we popped it out! Finally the hard part is out of the way!
Ok so I have finally finished the backside shell it took way longer than expected but now I measured the airspace with a cardboard box that I made to the exact dimensions and then filled it with dogfood which will represent the airspace so I then poured the dogfood into the shell and can use that to determine what the front shape of the box is going to look like! Here are a couple pics I snapped of the process and more is comming very very soon!!
P.S. if anybody is trying to make a box for a 12 w3 or even 10 w6 the airspace needed is exactly perfect to the amount of dogfood in that 43 pound bag haha
While im here I thought I would show you the sound deadener I got!
That whole box is full of it :)

I LOVE PROJECTS!!!! How deep are you making it? Looks like its not even as deep as my amp box!
How many cubes are you aiming for?
What sub are you gonna put into it?!

Im going for 1.125 cubes and putting a 12 jl w3v3 in it and thats the air space that jl says it needs and that little part there in the back is going all the way down to the floor i had to cut away some of the little rack the bose amp is mounted to (hopefully im taking that out and upgrading the whole system soon) and im thinking about actually bolting the box to the floor in the bottom using two bolts that were already there in the bottom holding a wire in place because my buddy made a box like this in his civic and it would always just fall out when he went around a turn so i deffinatly dont want that to happen but im only doing that if i have to but we just started on it yesterday so we are making good progress a long way to go though
Oh and I am debating what i want to do with my amp i think im gonna fiberglass another rack on the other side of the truck to hold it. and I also need to make up my mind on what amp to run :/

Sorry, I meant depth from the left side of the car to the right. How "deep" will your box be? That's what I should have asked. There is space to screw the box down to the floor. I used some 1 7/8" screws. Just double check to make sure that there is nothing running around there under the body. As for the little screw ends sticking up out of the floor, I just cut small holes to avoid them or I actually used them as rest points. This probably wont apply to you since you are building a sealed box. I'm guessing the face will be a wooden face. You can just put a couple L brackets and screw it in place that way.
I have never fiberglassed anything on my own. Just watched and helped a few times. Keep it goin! Let us know what amps you are considering!

Oh ok my bad well im honestly not sure how far im going to go back it depends on how my air space is looking after i pop that back shell out but as for the screws im actually planning on utilizing the screw ends sticking up from the floor and just use them to bolt it down with because they are in an excelent spot for it. And actually it isnt going to have any wood (besides the dowels that will help form the shape. but im going to make the entire thing fiberglass by getting the wooden dowels and making the shape and then streching cloth over that and then fiberglassing the cloth. I am super excited to see how it turns out the only thing im worried about is taking it out is gonna be a bitch. But fiberglassing is easy this is the first time i have done it but my buddy is helping me and he has done it once before on his car you just have to take your time and make sure that you do it right the first time cause that fiberglass is not cheap.
And we put more coats on today and are looking at popping that shell out either tomorrow night or friday (sooner the better my car smells like straight fiberglass resin im getting high everywhere I go)
Oh and as for amps im leaning now towards a jl 500/1 cause i can get one for 200 but if anybody has suggestions let me know i have just always used jl so i dont know much about anything else

Hard to take out?
I have seen people line the entire thing with foil so that it'll be easier to manipulate.
:-) Take "during the process" pictures!
JL 500/1 sounds like a decent choice for the money. The alpine pDX 1.600 is smaller but probably more expensive - I think the last time I saw one of those for sale it was $240 or so used.
BTW, they are small like text books. Be creative with your amp rack !

500/1 is awesome...all the slash amps are pretty sweet, but i heard that they fixed alot of the problems that they had on the 500/1v2's. the r.i.p.s. is awesome and the quality of the sound is unbelievable. the pdx amps are great too, and hes right, they are tiny. jl woofer...jl amp ..hard to beat. i had a 10w3v3 on a 500/1, and never had to adjust the bass. put in some metal or rock and it matched my xr's perfectly, put in some rap and it would beat down. great looking start..do they make a stealthbox for g35 coupes yet?
agdarnell
11-19-2009, 11:59 AM
Yea I have seen that to but the problem with mine is if you look at the way i have it in there with the back portion sticking down to the floor but the top still going right up to the roof then im not going to be able to lift that little part out of the floor im going to have to actually slide the carpet out take out the tire and then unbolt the little plastic peice to slide it out. but i guess i wont be actually taking the box out very much so as long as its possible to do im happy.
And honestly as far as how im mounting the amp i have no freakin clue right now. I want to do somthing more creative than just putting it on the back of the seat but i dont know how to make it look cool yet still look stock in there at the same time. Because the box is all going to be carpeted to match everything in the truck and if it works the way im planning will look built in so I kinda want to do the same for the amp without hiding it.

Yes they do make one and it goes down under the carpet right under where im putting my box but it will only hold like an 8inch w1 i think or maybe a 10 but still i needed somthing a little more than a w1

Man they are deffinatly sick I had one in my sierra and it hit great I loved it and if they made one that would hold a good size sub for my car I would have gotten it instantly but unfortunatly they dont but im still making good progress on this one and I think im going to be happy with it :D
and I have always had w3's and I almost went to a w6 this time but to get the air space I would have needed would have taken up way to much of the trunk so I just stuck with the w3

I like my eclipse head unit. I have had it for years and it still runs like a stallion. Decent quality IMHO
I'm curious about the newer pioneers. I might try one of those next

i have a question that kinda relates to this subject. ok so you fiberglass the back to make it form to the car and get as many ft^3 as possible but what do you do about the front and giving the sub a structure to mount to? do you put on really thick fiberglass or what? pics would help as you are doing yours

Heatgun + second Skin = MUCH EASIER... and stickier.. and perfect during a cold ass day cause you don't get too hot!

It is a little hard to explain but I will try and I will definatly take pictures of the process but once I get the rear shell to the thickness it needs no be (between 6 and 8 solid coats I believe) then I will make a cardboard box to the exact airspace to is required for the sub and fill it with somthing like dogfood to replicate the amount of space. Then I take that dogfood and dump it into my shell and see how much space I need to add to the front. I then take wooden dowels and a wooden ring that is the correct deminsions to mount the sub to and fasten the dowels up to hold the ring in place. Then I take a stretchy cloth of some kind and stretch it out around the ring and fasten it to the shell so that it forms a mold of the front that i want. Then I put fiberglass on top of the fabric and coat it untill thick enough and i have a box. And the sub just mounts to the wooden ring on the inside. I hope that helped haha but i will take plenty of pictures once I get that part started :D Im just in the boring stage of putting layers on the shell

so what makes the joint between the shell and the front? just overlapping fiberglass

Alright here's a quick update the amp I bought on eBay the guy pulled some shit and now I'm not getting it and I am super pissed about it I spent 2 hours onthe phone with eBay people trying to get him in trouble. As far as the box I have been working so much I havnt done much to it! But I did just today order 160 square feet of second skin damplifier pro from a guy up in Florence me an two other guys went in together and got it super cheap!! I am hoping to finish up the box and have everything installed somtime after Xmas! But that second skin is gonna take awhile cause I have never put that stuff on before so we will see

I heard about the damplifier... You guys got a wicked deal. (I got 72 sq ft for $250 2 years ago and I know you guys did better lol) 160 is a lot lol But don't worry, if you do your doors, sides, and double layer the trunk, you can use about 60-80sq ft easily hehehe

Sure, paypal claims that it is as safe as it gets, but I have been screwed over by them at least 2 or 3 times because
#1 they have a 45 day policy while your CC has 60 and sometimes can even go for longer
#2 the paypal person has to agree with you! They also don't accept photographs as part of your claim. (at the time)
#3 sending money from the bank is like sending cash - if you send the money and the guy withdraws it before you realized you're screwed, it is GONE. The PP claim people can agree with you - but what happens? They end up putting a hold on the guy's account and you end up hoping that he comes back and fixes his problem. If not, you are S.O.L.
in my book, paypal is all bullsh*t. Pay with your CC through paypal - the end
By the way, the above list = all problems that I have had... and been screwed

OK so after all this time of what seemed like doing nothing I have finally made some steps forward in the box!
This is after we cut off all of the edges and made it smooth in the trunk.
This was a real surprise actually I thought there was no way I was going to be able to use this handle again but it worked out perfectly!!
Then we cut our the ring to the exact size we needed from MDF board and placed it were we wanted it and superglued the dowels in place to hold it.
Then we took an old stretchy t-shirt and pulled it tight over the ring and glued it in place around the box to take the form of the outside shell.
And finally we covered it in just plain fiberglass resin and let it soak in the cloth!!
It is getting very very close to the end on this!
hey wanted to know where you go that second skin and how much, i'm planning to do some stereo stuff and wanted to know where i can find some for a good price, not looking to go all out either mostly just the doors and trunk lid and a few spots here or there. pm me if you don't want to post that info
